“People, who create, modify or delete data should have their actions recorded and linked with the outcome to help tackle the problem of illegal or inappropriate alterations to databases.”
That's according to renowned computer scientist Charlie Bachman who was lecturing on the evolution of database technology to the British Computer Society Data Management Specialist Group in London recently.
He says: "I believe in and have recommended that the person, or persons involved in the creation, modification, or deletion of data should be recorded and that record associated with the data of their creation. Their authorship should be recorded along with the data so that others can observe who the author(s) are and evaluate the authorship appropriately. Some transactions or edits might require a dual authorship to authorize changes."
All Down To Earth users should be reminded that Full Audit Functions exist within Down To Earth Applications. Systems Administrators can view every change, addition and deletions there have been made to the data. This includes the before and the after value of the data; the action which was being performed; the user name who amended the data; the computer name that the alterations were made on; the interface that was being used; the record ID; the field being amended and the date which these alterations were last amended.
